Are You Looking for a Sign?

God could bolster your faith by providing a sign. Some might object on the grounds that real faith would never demand a sign. After all, Abraham never demanded a sign. What about the reply from Jesus when the Pharisees and teachers of the law sought a sign from Him: “A wicked and adulterous generation asks for a miraculous sign!” (Matthew 12:39).

Whereas the above request stemmed from contemptuous and unbelieving hearts, there are occasions in the Bible where faithful servants asked for and received signs. When called by God to lead His people against the Midianites, Gideon said, “Give me a sign that it is really you talking to me” (Judges 6:17). The LORD granted his request by consuming Gideon’s sacrifice with fire. Still not convinced, Gideon sought another sign by way of a wool fleece.

David, a man after God’s own heart, prayed for a sign (Psalm 86:17). God commanded Judah’s King Ahaz to seek a sign (Isaiah 7:11). Ahaz’s successor Hezekiah received a sign that he would be healed from a deadly disease (Isaiah 38:7-8).

God understands our humanness. There are times, in His sovereignty He may choose to strengthen our faith with a sign. Otherwise, we should fix our “eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen” (2 Corinthians 4:18), with full assurance that He will provide an answer in His perfect timing.
